Ballet an its Music traces the influence of the outstanding personalities in the world of ballet from the seventeenth century to the present day. The development of dance-technique and ballet music is followed from the courtly and peasant dances of the High Renaissance through to contemporary productions. The author deals in detail not only with the great choreographers, past and present, but also with the composers whose names are especially linked with ballet and who have made a significant contribution to music for the dance. She combines a historical narrative with a perceptive treatment of world-famous Schools and Companies. Ballet and its Music is copiously illustrated with photographs and engravings. A special feature of the book is the collection of music extracts from many famous ballets, arranged for piano solo, which will make it particularly attractive to the student an amateur musician. Althrough primarily intended for young people embarking on a study of ballet, the wealth of information contained in this book will make it a stimulating and invaluable guide for readers of all ages.

Inspired by the French Romantic and Impressionist traditions, my romances for fute and piano, composed during late July and early August 1984, was carefully conceived for the marvelous lyrical and technical gifts of Robert Stallman and Richard Goode, to whom the work is warmly dedicated. All three Romances, although brief in duration, unfold with a sense of large gesture and design. The first Romance is in 3/4 time and flows generally in the manner of a lyrical waltz with occasional turbulent interruptions. The second Romance is in 4/4 time, unfolding in a stately Baroque-like manner, and the third Romance is in 2/4 time, melodically expansive and often tempestuous. All three Romances strive to honor the goals of traditional performance practice while, at the same time, they create an energy and drama of modernity and contemporary richness. And for these goals I am indebted to so many of the most outstanding performers and conductors of our time with whom I have worked and from whom I have learned much– those who have demonstrated the importance of preserving in addition to further developing those significant natural attributes of musical expression and traditional performance practice which are so often ignored in contemporary compositional values. — William Thomas McKinleyFlute & Piano Duration: 14' Composed: 1984 Published by: Notevole Music Publishing.

Like many composers who found themselves in exile during the war years, Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed in a very neoclassical and neoromantic style, reviving more traditional or antiquated ideas of melody, tonality and texture. His collection of Shakespeare Songs feature settings of verse from across the full range of the Bard's plays, and have proved to be great critical successes still widely performed today. Suitable to be adapted by most voices. the songs are interwoven with complex and thrilling Piano accompaniments that bring colour and energy to the often liberally edited texts. Book ten contains a set of six short songs adapted from King Lear.
